DESCRIPTION:
APW - Waltham, scarce to rare Lugrin's patent double-dial chronograph with conversion dial for use in HC format, Model 1874, 7J, 14S, sterling silver original AWCo HC with latch release for front and rear operated by tilting the bow away from side that is opened, initials to front shield, gold hinges, front with white enamel SS timekeeping dial, rear with white enamel chronograph chapter ring divided in 1/5-second increments, SW-LS, gilt mvt, s#912303. A good looking early example of Waltham's double-dial chronograph, this is the first 7 jewel version of this watch we have handled. We suspect this is significantly scarcer than its higher jeweled variants, but we are unaware of any published production figures for this type.
CONDITION:
Mvt: NR, fully wound and balance somewhat gummy but will tick continuously if given a twist along with a bit of excess pressure to the crown, good chronograph function when tested with pressure held to the crown, overhaul needed, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall to visible portion, some fine scratches and small spots, center bridge with a somewhat lighter gilt tone; flawless front dial with a bit of surface dirtiness; rear dial with chipping around affixing screw at 15-seconds, fracture and small chip around affixing screw at 45-seconds; near mint hands; case shows very light wear, a moderate patina, mild shallow dent to upper front, ding to lower right perimeter of front, ding toward right perimeter of rear, few nicks or small dings to band and rear, engine turning detail largely intact but with some incongruently sharp areas around front central that were presumably re-engraved at some time in the past, loss of engine turning around center rear; tight bow, crown shows little wear; good glass crystals, rear with some glue excess around its seat.
